BIO: Martha Mauney is originally from Bryson City, North Carolina. She received degrees from Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC. A career as a Registered Dietitian brought her to the foothills in 1984. She began taking watercolor classes at Catawba Valley Community College in 1987. Martha soon developed a realistic painting style. An interest in photography has aided in the creation of florals, objects from nature and landscape paintings. Retiring from dietetics in 1999, Martha began devoting more time to painting and exhibiting her work in local and regional shows. Martha is a Signature Member of the Watercolor Society of North Carolina. She is also a member of the Southern Watercolor Society and Foothills Painters.
ARTIST STATEMENT: Watercolor painting appeals to me because of the pure colors and transparency. I therefore work exclusively in that medium. I choose to paint colorful subjects that attract my attention. My paintings are detailed by design. They are not intended to make a profound statement but to offer the viewer a glimpse of what makes me happy and content.
